28 (M)—“Whitetail:
Treasure, Trophy or Trouble?” A presentation
by Larry Stone, outdoor writer and freelance naturalist-----7pm,
Parkview Evangelical Church, 15 Foster Rd., Iowa City.
This
40-minute slide lecture is free and open to all who are
interested in learning more about Iowa’s whitetail
deer population.
Hunters,
farmers, homeowners, motorists, and wildlife watchers each
may have their own opinions of deer, but it’s no exaggeration
to say that Iowa’s prolific deer herd affects nearly
every person in the state. How can that be, when Iowa’s
originally abundant deer had nearly vanished a century ago,
and deer have become relatively common only in recent decades?
The
history of Iowa deer—from feast to famine to smorgasbord—is
testimony to the incredible adaptability of deer, as well
as to a century of conservation and restoration efforts.
This
program has been adapted by Stone from his book, written
in 2003 for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. It’s
a story with broad appeal to anyone interested in Iowa’s
outdoors and includes striking photos by Stone and premier
wildlife photographer Roger Hill, of Roland, Iowa.
The
program is co-sponsored by the Johnson County Conservation
Board and the Iowa City Deer Task Force. For more information,
